Our Op-Ed published yesterday on The Advocate! Last week Beth Greenfield published her article about our story on Yahoo! There are some amazing people out there who wrote us word of encouragement, and most responses have been overwhelmingly positive, but of course there are trolls.
You know you read crazy stories about trolls, zealots and fanatical outcries by certain groups and it seems so far fetched that any person or organization would cruelly picket a soldiers funeral, or verbally attack Robin Williams daughter on Twitter after her father passed away, but it happens. We expect that not everyone is going to agree with us, our choices or lifestyle, but when it happens it still hurts.
Last week as Delaney's story hit Yahoo!, one of the largest ProLife organizations messaged me personally on Facebook to tell me that in Delaney's case they felt she should not have been born, not because she has Down syndrome, but because she has lesbian parents.
Fear and hatred run deep, folks. I have to sympathize with these people because just like I used to fear disabled people, they just do not know any better. Because this ProLife organization puts it's religion ahead of it cause they are only preaching to their own fanatical choir. They alienate an audience they might otherwise change.
I learned though just how important it is to speak up and not hide in the shadows. If we were afraid of this behavior and went back into our closets or didn't tell our stories, then hate would win.
