The graphics and catchy songs, which I find myself singing at work ("It's a new day, da dee do day...") seem to do the trick!
As soon as Delaney was able to use her arms I noticed her wiggling her arms up in the air when the DVD started to play. She was actually signing the word "signing!" This absolutely floored me. Next I noticed Delaney slapping her side (the sign for dog) every time our dog Joplin walked by.
Today Delaney signs about 20 words at 15 months old (watch below!) and her vocabulary is quickly expanding with 2-4 new signs a week now. I love seeing the impressions on our friends and families faces when she signs to us that she wants to "wash her hands" or wants "milk". Did she just do that? Oh yes she did! By the way, Delaney talks a lot too.
My advice to new parents, the DVD’s are worth the investment. We never know when our kids will start talking so knowing signs help them begin communicating. Don’t kid yourself into believing your children aren’t picking up the signs they are being taught, even at one month of age.
Buy the DVD's through our link and a portion of the sale goes to the Delaney Ott-Dahl Foundation where we use the money to provide doctors with up-to-date informational pamphlets about Down syndrome to give new parents receiving the diagnosis.
If you can’t afford the brand new set, you may be able to find used DVD’s on Craigslist or Ebay.
